"Woven Stories: Don Johnson’s Art That Gives Back"

Featured Artisan: Don Johnson
Macramé Jewelry Maker & Co-Founder of Omega Global Development

Don Johnson’s story with macramé began in the early seventies, when he first learned the craft in high school—creating belts and plant hangers during a time when handmade art filled everyday life. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. military and served faithfully. Following his service, Don built a long career at the VA hospital and eventually retired, carrying with him both discipline and a deep compassion for others.

His wife reintroduced Don to macramé after he retired, and he viewed it as a form of wearable art. The old skills returned, but now with a new purpose. Don had already committed to strengthening and empowering young people across African communities as a co-founder of Omega Global Development. He wanted his hands to be part of that work tangibly.

He began his work with paracord bracelets, inspired by his military background, when soldiers used paracord as a dependable, life-saving material. Don uses that same paracord today, weaving it into pieces that are stylish enough for everyday wear but still durable enough to be helpful in an emergency. Soon, he will also release paracord necklaces that combine beauty, memory, and practicality into a single piece.

Don also creates macrame rope necklaces made from 100% recycled cotton sourced from a small, eco-conscious factory in Warsaw, Poland. The factory produces the rope without dyes and certifies that it is free of harmful substances. Don chooses every color himself and works without patterns, allowing each design to unfold naturally. Europeans widely appreciate macrame jewelry, but it is still emerging in the United States, and Don helps introduce it with a style shaped by African influence and global connection.

The heart behind his work is simple and strong: to support the communities Omega Global Development serves. Every purchase helps fund education, training, and long-term development.

AIM (African Impact Marketplace) is now proudly featuring Don’s macrame and paracord jewelry in our store. His pieces carry history, skill, and purpose—woven one knot at a time.

This is more than jewelry.
It is art with intention.
It is a legacy-made wearable.
We are also honored to share it with you.
